The Australian Navy Sailor
The Australian Navy Sailor
I am an old Australian Navy sailor
I come from a time when shipmates looked after each other
Where people were held accountable for their actions
And when our leaders were leaders of men
I am a modern Australian Navy Sailor
I look at my shipmates today and hope I can count on them when times are tough
I watch people milk a system which is very careful to look after the suspect rather than the victim
Where our leaders bow to political and social whims
I am an old Australian Navy Sailor
I come from a time when our numbers were plentiful
When you were proud to wear the uniform
And serving your country was admired
I am a modern Australian Navy Sailor
I live in a time when our numbers fluctuate between desperate and critical
Where being in the Defence Force is the punch line of a bad joke
Where serving your country is something you try to hide
I am an old Australian Navy Sailor
I come from a time when our reputation was not an embarrassment
When civilian staff worked FOR the Defence Force
And when my work was not hampered by contracts
I am a modern Australian Navy Sailor
I live in a time when I can watch our eroding reputation nightly on the 6 o’clock news
Where the Defence Force heels to its civilian staff
Where my job now requires me to be conversant in contract management
I am an old Australian Sailor
And I weep for the future of the Australian Defence Force
I can see the day looming when I look at what I do as just a job that pays my bills
Instead of a career of which I am immensely proud
I am an old Australian Sailor
And I believe we have lost our way
