Dear All

I am writing to you in relation to the Voyager Memorial Park Huskisson NSW and Councils Master Plan for the Park and the development of a Remembrance Court to incorporate HMAS Voyager memorabilia from the Huskisson RSL Sub Branch along with existing memorabilia in the park.  I am In particular seeking comments from you on incorporating the existing granite stone/plagues located in the park into the proposed Remembrance Court.

In 2010, Council was approached by Huskisson RSL Sub Branch to display various replica HMAS Voyager memorabilia throughout Voyager Memorial Park, Huskisson.  The placing of the replica items within the park had not been identified in the adopted Master Plan of Voyager Memorial Park and White Sands, Huskisson. To meet the request of the community group, taking into consideration the overall adopted Master Plan vision, Council staff commenced a review of the Voyager Memorial Park Master Plan.

the review of the Memorial design, it was envisaged that the replica items be incorporated into the design of this Memorial footprint, also known as ‘Remembrance Court’. The draft concept design of the Memorial is in keeping with the existing plan and respects the memorial of service men and women in a positive and reflective setting Master Plan attached for your information.  The ‘remembrance court’ consists of a circular tiered raised area with low height stone walls that bisect the area. These walls provide various entry points and direct people through and to the center of the space.

The stone walls and pavement treatment within the memorial have the potential to provide powerful symbolic representation through engraving and etching on the surfaces. The history of ANZAC along with the HMAS Voyager can be presented graphically along with the names of people who served and lost their lives.

Stone seating areas face into the memorial and away to the views of Jervis Bay. A central sculpture provides a focal point for the memorial.

The objectives of the revised draft Master Plan include:

• An attractive delivery that meets budget and timeframe expectations;

• Relocate and upgrade ANZAC Memorial including all existing plaques;

• Co-locate memorabilia of HMAS Voyager with the ANZAC Memorial;

• Design to respect and highlight the importance of each Memorial without overshadowing the other;

• Design to be non-intrusive to the natural setting but of a quality standard;

• Retain existing tree (lone pine) at current location whilst improving its health; and

• Memorial to be accessible and valued by local and visiting communities.

The overall strategy of the design is to commemorate those who serve our country, creating a space to remember, acknowledge, reflect and mourn. The ‘Remembrance Court’ seeks to function as an intimate space for quiet individual reflection as well as a ceremonial space for commemorative occasions. The importance of the project was brought to the attention of staff by the Huskisson Sub Branch, which has begun preparations for the 2014 50th commemorative memorial

anniversary of the HMAS Voyager incident.

In 2015, Australia as a Nation will be commemorating the 100th memorial anniversary of the Gallipoli landing. Anzac Day ceremonies held at Voyager Memorial Park are well attended and it is anticipated that the 100th anniversary will be acknowledged as a major event for the Shoalhaven in 2015.

We are currently working on the detail design for the Remembrance Court which is proposing to etch on the stone walls and floors emblems, names, quotes etc in relation to the HMAS Voyager and ANZAC.

Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated.  Please contact me if you wish to discuss this further.

Regards

Susan Edwards
